SPOTLIGHT ON SCHOOL SAFETY, SECURITY, & VIOLENCE PREVENTION…
School safety, security, and violence prevention are priorities in all schools including SAOPCS. We are continually working to provide a safe and secure environment in which our students can learn and our staff members can work. There are many components that go into a comprehensive program to provide a safe environment. Here are just a few of the ways SAOPCS is addressing the issues…
We have a Crisis Management Staff Committee that focuses on all aspects of campus safety, security and crisis management.
A comprehensive Crisis Management Binder is issued to staff members for use in emergency situations addressing over 26 potential crisis situations.
Emergency backpacks with supplies to be used in crisis situations are issued to staff members and kept in each classroom.
Safety drills are routinely conducted simulating fire, weather, lockdown, and building evacuation situations. Evacuation routes are posted in classrooms and areas of campus.
Routine inspections and tests are conducted on playground equipment, gas lines, fire alarm and sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, etc.
Exterior doors with the exception of the main entrance are kept locked during school hours. A video surveillance system monitors entrances, hallways, and stairways.
Ongoing staff training is conducted on topics such as child abuse, CPR certification, first aid certification, AED certification, internet safety, cyberbullying, conflict resolution, etc.
Student programs such as monthly Character Traits & Social Skills, Red Ribbon Week, Bullying Awareness Week, and Internet Safety Week teach students skills that they can use now and in the future.
Targeting specific issues raises awareness and can bring about positive change. This year we have targeted bullying with the introduction of a Bullying Hotline and a Conflict Resolution Social Skill. In addition, we are hosting national speaker, Jim Bisenius on November 9th to conduct student assemblies, teacher/staff training, and a parent workshop.
Research points to the success of school safety, security, and violence prevention programs relying on the cooperation of all members of the school community—students, teachers/staff, and parents.
