As we begin a new school year, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to SAOPCS! My name is Janay O’Connor and I am the school counselor. I was born in Nashville, Tennessee but have spent most of my life in Texas. I received a B.A degree from the University of Texas-Dallas in Political Science and an M.Ed degree in Counseling Psychology from Rutgers University in New Jersey. I have worked in the field of education for several years. I began my career as a remedial reading teacher in Dallas, Texas. I have also taught second grade while obtaining my Master’s degree to become a school counselor. I love being a school counselor and feel I have a true passion for helping children succeed in life. On a personal note, I have been married for over 20 years to Tommy O’Connor. We have two sons—Austin attends **** and Spencer is in his sophomore year at Strake Jesuit High School.
As the counselor, I have the pleasure of working with every student at St. Anthony’s, along with many of the parents. In the role of the school counselor, my job involves a variety of duties. Some of these include:
· I meet with students, either individually or in small groups, to discuss concerns and brainstorm solutions. These meetings occur through student self-referrals, or at the request of a parent or teacher.
· I conduct developmental guidance lessons at all grade levels. These lessons cover a variety of topics, such as friendship, problem solving, conflict resolution, cooperation, social skills and self-concept.
· I am a member of the Educational Team; a group of staff members who meet with the student’s parents to determine what interventions can be utilized in order for each student to reach their maximum potential. Concerns brought to the Educational Team can be academic, behavioral or social in nature, and generally interfere with a student's achievement.
· I consult with teachers on a regular basis in the best interest of our students. I also collaborate with parents as a liaison between home and school. I truly believe that communication between home and school is vital for student success.
· I provide referrals to outside agencies upon parent request.
· I provide education and support services to parents.
As the school counselor, I am an advocate for the children of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School. I feel truly blessed to be able to help our children grow in their Catholic faith and teach them what it means to be a Disciple of Christ. If you have a question or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me, either by telephone at 832-482-4168, or via e-mail at
[email protected]. I look forward to working with you and your children this year. Best wishes for a fantastic school year!
